The Many Faces of Skye Hybrid

It's a bit late because of setting up WSS, but I got there in the end!

Did you know Skye Hybrid hit his 10th birthday a few months ago? It feels like he's only been with me for a short time, but my little crazy hybrid is already celebrating 10 years of life!

A recap of Skye's life:

Skye started out life in the Emerald Generations comic I wrote, but sadly never got around to sharing on DA. He was born into the EG universe as Shou's son. He took his place in history at aged 3, fighting alongside his father and grandfather to defeat an evil threat. But his inexperience got him into trouble and his grandfather made the ultimate sacrifice to protect him. Skye had never been able to live down the guilt. But instead of moping over the loss, he chose to embrace life as much as he could in memory.

But that plan was interrupted with the Purification. Which is where Skye made his mark with EG: Purity. The RP brought people from all over the world together and many of us are still good friends today

The different EG RPs ran along, all of the characters growing up together, their designs growing with them. Eventually I chose to take Skye in a new direction. That direction came with a new design, Skye's red fur, lots of spikes design! Skye had always had a very typical and boring Sonic fan character design, which never gave his personality a chance to really shine out. But with his new design, he could become more than just a fan character (Although due to the nature of the RP, he still kept his Sonic style design). It was with this new design, he also met his future partner in crime, Saber Darkwolf.

The RP continued on for a long time after, but eventually slowed down to a crawl. Skye and Saber had run their course in the series and it seemed clear their time was at an end.

Meanwhile, in the real world, I had just attended Bristol Comic Expo for the first time. After wandering about the day, exploring what was on offer, I came to the conclusion that I could attempt to start up my own comic series (one I would actually stick to!). I had always wanted to start drawing Soul Stone, a comic idea I'd had for a long time. But until I was sure I had the skills to make it a reality, I didn't want to risk it.

I missed using Saber and Skye in the RPs. I felt their time was too short. So I had the brainwave to use them in an experimental comic, Another Day at College. The original idea was just to have a laugh with them. But eventually the series because a prequel to Soul Stone, as Saber and Skye slowly infected my ideas for the Soul Stone series and fleshed out the story in ways I had never imagined. Thanks to them, I am happy to start producing the story, the first issue currently in production!

So with our heroes being in a non Sonic based story, new designs had to come. Saber had very little change, but Skye went under some dramatic changes. Originally I had planned him to be red, but then I had problems deciding on hair colour, so I ended up making his hair red and using the flesh colour on the rest of his body, as well as altering his facial design to match the rest of the Soul Stone character designs. Skye had left his fan character roots behind and was now a character in his own right.

Although I adore his new design, I'll never forget Skye's origins and his history. He has a special place in my heart and I hope you enjoy him not only in his past, but in his future to come!
